Sarah Babcock of Plymouth, MA, operates a school (on east side of Broad Street, just below the old courthouse) for former slaves for a time in Camden, SC. She later buys a 27-acre plantation in hopes of eventually starting another school.
1885 . . . .
Haven Industrial Home and School opens in Savannah, GA to educate children of former slaves.
1886 . . . .
Boylan Industrial Home and School opens in Jacksonville, FL to educate children of former slaves.
1887 . . . .
Browning Home opens in Camden, SC. A frame building is named for Mrs. Fanny O. Browning of Montville, CT, who provided funds to complete it.
1890 . . . .
New England Southern Conference buys Browning Home's property from Sarah Babcock Mather "for divine purposes only," according to land deed.
1893 . . . .
Anna Chestnut, Lula Sanders, Rachel Brown, and Amelia Boykin are first graduates of Browning Home.
1890 . . . .
John Maxwell, I.B. English and George McLain are first males to attend Browning Home.
1900 . . . .
Browning Home is renamed Mather Academy in honor of Rev. James Mather, Sarah Babcock Mather's husband.
1912 . . . .
Hubbard Hall, first academic building, opens at Mather. It is named in memory of Adelia Hubbard of Providence, RI, whose husband, Samuel H. Tingley, donated funds.
1928 . . . .
Mather's new brick Browning Home building is dedicated; school adds 12th grade while most public schools have only 11. Contractor: C.C. Wilson of Columbia.
1932 . . . .
Haven School merges with Boylan School in Jacksonville, FL.
1937 . . . .
Mather becomes Class A school --- a distinction held by only three other S.C. schools.
1950 . . . .
New boys' dormitory, Bryan Hall, opens, replacing 127-year-old wooden structure. Architect: A. Eugene Seller; Contractor: Frank Browmette; both of Jacksonville.
1959 . . . .
Boylan-Haven School merges with Mather Academy.
1964 . . . .
Brick, cross-shaped academic building replaces Hubbard Hall.
1983 . . . .
BHMA closes.
1995 . . . .
Women's Division orders all buildings demolished.
